Does your charity need an examination?

For financial years ending on or after 30 September 2026, the following thresholds apply in England and Wales:

  • Independent examination: income over £40,000, unless an audit is required.
  • Qualified examiner: income over £500,000.
  • Audit: income over £1.5 million, or gross assets over £5 million with income over £500,000.

Earlier year ends use the previous thresholds. Governing documents and funders may require scrutiny below statutory limits. See our charity independent examination and audit guide for the full comparison.
